Crystal Gayle was born in Paintsville, Kentucky on January 9, 1951. Her official name is Brenda Gail Webb. Crystal is the last born of 8 children. She is the daughter of Melvin Theodore Webb and Clara Marie Webb. Her father worked as a coal miner who later contracted black lung disease and her mother was a nurse’s aide.
The family later relocated to Wabash, Indiana in search of better treatment. Tedd Later died in 1959. Crystal claims that she discovered she could sing way before she could walk.
