Bennet Ifeakandu Omalu or Dr. Bennet Omalu was born on September 1968 in Nnokwa, Anambra, Nigeria. He has seven brothers and sisters. Due to the Nigerian Civil War, his family had to move to the village of Enugu-Ukwu in southeastern Nigeria. After two years of his birth, Omalu’s family came back to their hometown.
His father was a civil mining engineer and the community leader in Enugu-Ukwu while his mother was a seamstress. Omalu went to the Federal Government College Enugu to complete his secondary education. At the age of 16, he attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where he earned his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) in the year 1990.

Dr. Bennet Omalu started his career after graduating from college as a clinical intern which followed by three years of service work in the city of Jos, Nigeria. In 1994, he went to Seattle, Washington to complete an epidemiology fellowship at the University of Washington. The following year Omalu shifted to New York where he joined the Harlem Hospital Center to complete a training program in clinical pathology.
After completing his training, he joined forensic consultant Cyril Wecht at his Allegheny County Office in Pittsburg. While working with Wecht, he was highly interested in neuropathology.
In 2007, Omalu was appointed as the chief medical examiner of San Joaquin County, California. He resigned from the post in 2017 and accused the county’s Sheriff of interfering with death investigations to save law enforcement officers who killed innocent people. His assistant forensic pathologist also resigned from the office citing similar reasons.
He is currently a professor at the Department of Medical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the University of California, Davis.
Omalu is the recipient of eight advanced degrees and fellowships in pathology and neuropathology by the University of Pittsburgh, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Tepper School of Business, a Master of Public Health (MPH) in epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and many more.
