The native form of his name stands as Rubik Erno, who was born on the 13th of July, 1944 in Budapest of Hungary. His birth was in the years of the Second World War He has lived in Hungary throughout his life. He was born in the household of Erno Rubik Sr. and Magdolna Szántó. His father was his real inspiration who served as a flight engineer at the aircraft factory known as Esztergom, and his mother was a poet.
Rubik took training at the Secondary School of Fine and Applied Arts for specializing in making sculptures in the years 1958-1962. Then, he went to the Budapest University of Technology in 1962 and became the Architecture Faculty’s member too. From 1967-1971 he was at the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts where he was taken as the Faculty of Interior Architecture and Design.

He started his career at the Budapest College of Applied Arts as an architecture professor since 1971 till 1979. He finished his first prototype of the Rubik’s Cube in 1974 and applied for the patent in 1975.
The cube was named as Magic Cube by Rubik, but it was renamed as the Rubik’s Cube in 1980 by the ‘Ideal Toys,’ a US Company, who was given the license of the Cube by Rubik himself in 1979. This cube has been winning numerous ‘Toy of the Year’ awards through all these years and is one of “the best selling toys of all times.”
Other than this Rubik has also famed for his other inventions like the Rubik’s Snake, Rubik’s Magic, Rubik’s 360, etc. now talking of Rubik’s later career, he worked as the editor of a puzzle and games journal, then founded his studio in 1983 called the Rubik Studio, which was concerned with designs of furniture and obviously games. In 1987 he decided to work as a professor full-scale.
In 1990 he was the president of the Hungarian Engineering Academy, and then in 2009, he joined the Keimyung University at Daegu, South Korea as an honorary professor. He has achieved uncountable numbers of awards of which ‘The Hungarian Order of Merit Cross of the star’ is a must mention. Rubik founded the ‘International Rubik Foundation’ for supporting young and talented Architects and Engineers.
