Howard attended Thacher School, Fessenden School in Massachusetts and later enrolled in college at California Institute of Technology Rice University. He dropped out in 1924 to take full control of his father’s business.
His mother passed away when he was 16 years, and three years later his father passed. He became the sole heir to the great industrial fortune left behind by his father.

Howard’s personal affairs were at the focus of journalists all over. He first married in 1925 when he exchanged vows with Ella Botts Rice. He, however, filed for divorce in 1929. After that, he was in brief romantic relationships with several celebrity names like Katherine Hepburn, Janet Leigh, Gene Tierney, Ava Gardener, Rita Hayworth, and Billie Dove. In 1957, January 12th, he married his second wife, Jean Peters. The couple’s marriage lasted from 1957 to 1971.
