Coelho was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 24 August 1947. He is the only son of Pedro de Queima, an engineer, and Lygia Coelho, a homemaker. He was raised together with his only sister, Sonia Coelho, a writer. He had a quirky personality which made his parents take him to a medical institution, where he was released after he was twenty years. From a young age, he inspired me to become a writer.

Coelho wrote his next book, The Alchemist, and the Brazilian publisher could only print nine hundred copies. He later found a bigger publishing house, and though his book did not get much recognition, it did after publishing his next book, Brida. Later it became a best-selling book internationally.
Coelho writes at least a book after every two years. Some of his other books include; Hippie, The Valkyries, and Aleph, which are autobiographical, The Pilgrimage included. Others like The Manual of the Warrior of Light, Maktub, among others, are fictional.
In 2016, Coelho and Kobe Bryant met and discussed writing a children’s book together. Two months after they had begun writing, Bryant died in a plane crash, and Coelho deletes the whole draft.
