Richard Bertrand Spencer was born on May 11, 1978, in Boston, Massachusetts to his parents Sherry and Rand Spencer. His father was an ophthalmologist, and his mother was an heiress who worked at the cotton farms in Louisiana.
He spent most of his childhood days in Dallas, Texas. Spencer graduated from the St. Mark’s School of Texas in the year 1997. He went to the University of Virginia in the year 2001 where he received his degree in Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Music. Later he went to the University of Chicago to complete his Masters of Arts in 2003.
From 2005 to 2006, he was a student at the Vienna International Summer University. Later in 2005, he went to the Duke University to complete his Ph.D. in modern European intellectual history.

In 2010, he founded the website “AlternativeRight.com” and edited the website himself till 2002. He was appointed as the executive director of the Washington Summit Publishers on January 2011. In the same year, he was made the director and president of the National Policy Institute.
